Franklin County Free Press – Chambersburg, PA

Franklin County Free Press -- MACPA’s First Digital-Only Member

In 2019, Franklin County Free Press was created, by Vicky Taylor, and journalist for the Public Opinion, to provide timely and accurate news for the people of Franklin County. In 2022, the baton was passed to Nathan Neil, current publisher of the Franklin County Free Press and has adapted to the changing media landscape, staying committed to being accessible and responsive to its readers. The Free Press now offers real-time, in-depth coverage of local events, politics, and community issues, with real-time publishing of the current news as it happens.

As the newest digital-only member of MACPA, the Franklin County Free Press is eager to contribute its unique perspective as a digital-only publication. Publisher, Nathan Neil envisions the Free Press playing a pivotal role in discussions about the future of digital involvement for all our members along with creating the standards of journalism, particularly in the digital space. When asked how we, as an association, can provide them with the training they need, Nathan’s comment was profound. He said,” I would like to know how I can marry traditional journalism and keep the standard of excellence that print provides." Who knows, maybe that could a certification we offer to all the members who want to add quality journalism not only to the digital space but also the print space.

As our conversation continued, Rick Heckman, a familiar friend to the Association and current associate with Nathan, shared that he is excited to share his knowledge on what is working in the advertising space with their digital publication. Rick has been with the Franklin County Free Press since August of 2023.

The Franklin County Free Press looks forward to benefiting from the collective knowledge and support of the Association. In addition to seeking guidance on navigating the digital landscape, they hope to collaborate with other members on initiatives that could enhance the reach and impact of all publications, whether print or digital. As digital pioneers, they believe that their experiences will offer valuable insights to other publications facing similar transitions.

This milestone represents a significant evolution for the Association. We are proud to welcome Franklin County Free Press as our first digital-only member and are eager to foster a strong relationship that will help guide and integrate future digital-only members into our MACPA community of publications.
